5th Grade Starbase Experience

Cory Martin/Laurie Gaylord
With this in mind, we have been building in more opportunities for our students to increase their knowledge and experience dealing with a myriad of technology programs and skills in our middle and high school elective classes. However, these opportunities are beginning to become more available to our elementary students as well. One unique opportunity that our 5th grade students have taken advantage of over the past few years is through an amazing program called STARBASE. This program is organized through Hunter Army Airfield and is federally funded by the Department of Defense with the goal of “using hands-on activities in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) to get students excited and interested in these fields.” This is a week long intensive program where project based learning is exposing our 5th grade students to things they normally may never have the chance to experience as an elementary student. They are getting the chance to learn skills and content in many scientific fields through work in robotics labs, computer aided design (CAD), structural engineering projects with rockets, data analysis, and much more. The importance of technology is only going to continue to increase within our society, and our students are growing up in a world where they must be “digital natives.” It is opportunities like these, provided through STARBASE, that will continue to expose and help our students understand the many careers available to them in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. Parents, you can find more information about STARBASE, their curriculum, and other available programs at STARBASE Savannah.
