We are a community of learners and leaders where teaching and learning are stimulating, interesting, and Christ-centered. Students, staff, and parents are supportive of one another and work cooperatively to reach ever higher academic, social, emotional, and spiritual competencies. Differences are accepted and respected by students, staff, and parents. We follow many pathways to learning while sharing goals that unite us, a common core of knowledge, and a belief in biblical truths.
It is our desire to learn more about you and your family and how we may best serve your child. We seek to develop each student: academically, athletically, socially and most of all, spiritually. In turn, we are seeking students who want to integrate and fully invest in the school with their time and talent to obtain the most out of their experience here at Calvary Day School.
Our key verse at Calvary Day School is Luke 2:52, which states: “So Jesus grew both in height and in wisdom, and he was loved by God and by all who knew him.” For the Administration and educators of Calvary, this verse is a presentation of the guiding force behind everything we do. This verse encompasses the four components of a truly Christian philosophy of education: physical growth, intellectual growth, spiritual growth, and social/interpersonal growth.
At Calvary Day School, we are called to a higher mission. We infuse faith into our classrooms, clubs, gymnasiums, playing fields, etc.; in essence, into whatever is being done or taught. At Calvary we also pursue excellence in whatever we do. As a result of this internal pursuit of excellence, Calvary was recognized as the first charter member of the National Elementary Honor Society, and our students are accepted each year into some of the finest colleges and universities in the United States, with over half of these students typically receiving academic scholarships.
Since Calvary Day School opened its doors in 1961, it has been blessed with enormous support from those who seek to further the school’s mission of providing an academically challenging education in a uniquely Christian environment. Exceptional teachers, state-of-the-art facilities, and superior athletic venues are all possible because of the generous support of the Calvary family.
If the Smell of Turkey is in the Air.... College Applications Should be in the Mail
Stacey Mell
Students have the option to apply to college early. Early deadlines are usually set in the fall around the time period of October 15th to December 1st. So, for most schools, the deadline to apply early is approaching or already passed.
Another admissions option is applying regular decision. Regular decision deadlines typically run from January 1st till February 15th. Students should check the websites of the colleges of interest to find out the exact application deadline. These applicants are given the “holistic” approach, and many factors are considered for acceptance, not just test scores, gpa and course rigor. Many students are better all around applicants when the colleges are able to consider their personal essay, view community service hours, extracurricular activities, counselor and teacher recommendations, and work history. If that is the case, applying regular decision would be the best option for many students.
Another option for students is applying to open enrollment, rolling admissions colleges and universities. Rolling admissions schools do not have a “set” deadline for applications to be sent in. Once an application is received, the student is processed through, and a notification of acceptance or denial status will be sent out. The entire process takes about three to four weeks. Open enrollment refers to colleges and universities that will accept admission applications through the spring.
There are many decisions that have to be made concerning college applications and choices. Calvary students do not have to walk that road by themselves. At Calvary Day School we are going to help prepare our students throughout their high school career by encouraging, explaining, and meeting with your student to suggest the best course of action. Calvary holds rising freshmen and senior group meetings, sophomore and junior roundtable small group college discussions, individual senior college meetings, college application question and answer sessions, and virtual tour opportunities for all students. The college counselor will read and critique your student’s essay(s) and college applications to make sure that each of Calvary’s students are sending in the best possible application to the colleges of their choice.
It’s almost Thanksgiving…. the smell of turkey will be in the air soon.., if you have not started the application process, now is the time.
