The Beginning of School

Marianne Chase

As a teacher for many years, I always enjoyed walking into a classroom filled with new students and new possibilities. When my children were young, I wanted them to make the most of their school year and the opportunities that came with it. As a Christian, I have always wanted the school year to be dedicated to Christ.

School days are busy, filled with academics, athletics, and activities. There are many influences in a student's life; the most powerful influence may be their classroom teacher or their coach or their friends. “Even a child is known by his doings, whether his work be pure, and whether it be right” (Prov. 20:11). You do not get what you want – you get what you are. We must encourage our kids to develop friendships with righteous people. A new school year allows us to make new connections, touching new lives as well as opening many possibilities for long-standing friends and relationships.

No young person is exempt from facing at least occasional difficulties associated with school.  So we will continue to teach our students to face challenges with faith and courage; if things get rough, dust yourself off, work to resolve the problems constructively, and move on positively.

There is a spirit of expectancy about the new year. Make the most of the year by giving it to God…one day at a time. No one can do more with it than He can!
