Merry Christmas from the Brunn Family

Tonja Brunn
Iceland observes Jolabokaflod, or the Christmas Flood, which describes the flood of new books on the market during the weeks leading up to Christmas. Almost all Icelandic books are published right before Christmas, and this is a treasured time to celebrate reading together. One special tradition tied to Jolabokaflod is the giving and receiving of books on Christmas Eve. Readers enjoy their book throughout the day and go to bed that night with chocolate and their new book. No wonder Iceland has one of the highest literacy rates in the world, with a steady rate of 99% in all age and gender categories. Reading is a priority in their culture as demonstrated through this beautiful tradition. The Brunn family started our annual celebration of Jolabokaflod three years ago, and every Christmas Eve we have a great day of sharing the love of reading together. We usually have the fireplace going (even though, it is rarely cold enough for it), and each of us receives a surprise book to read which we really enjoy. I can’t wait to see what book my family will choose for me this year, and I also look forward to choosing great books for my husband and kids. I hope that you join the ‘book flood’ and give the gift of reading this Christmas season. Need recommendations? Our Media Center Staff is here to help!
