We are a community of learners and leaders where teaching and learning are stimulating, interesting, and Christ-centered. Students, staff, and parents are supportive of one another and work cooperatively to reach ever higher academic, social, emotional, and spiritual competencies. Differences are accepted and respected by students, staff, and parents. We follow many pathways to learning while sharing goals that unite us, a common core of knowledge, and a belief in biblical truths.
It is our desire to learn more about you and your family and how we may best serve your child. We seek to develop each student: academically, athletically, socially and most of all, spiritually. In turn, we are seeking students who want to integrate and fully invest in the school with their time and talent to obtain the most out of their experience here at Calvary Day School.
Our key verse at Calvary Day School is Luke 2:52, which states: “So Jesus grew both in height and in wisdom, and he was loved by God and by all who knew him.” For the Administration and educators of Calvary, this verse is a presentation of the guiding force behind everything we do. This verse encompasses the four components of a truly Christian philosophy of education: physical growth, intellectual growth, spiritual growth, and social/interpersonal growth.
At Calvary Day School, we are called to a higher mission. We infuse faith into our classrooms, clubs, gymnasiums, playing fields, etc.; in essence, into whatever is being done or taught. At Calvary we also pursue excellence in whatever we do. As a result of this internal pursuit of excellence, Calvary was recognized as the first charter member of the National Elementary Honor Society, and our students are accepted each year into some of the finest colleges and universities in the United States, with over half of these students typically receiving academic scholarships.
Since Calvary Day School opened its doors in 1961, it has been blessed with enormous support from those who seek to further the school’s mission of providing an academically challenging education in a uniquely Christian environment. Exceptional teachers, state-of-the-art facilities, and superior athletic venues are all possible because of the generous support of the Calvary family.
Iceland observes Jolabokaflod, or the Christmas Flood, which describes the flood of new books on the market during the weeks leading up to Christmas. Almost all Icelandic books are published right before Christmas, and this is a treasured time to celebrate reading together. One special tradition tied to Jolabokaflod is the giving and receiving of books on Christmas Eve. Readers enjoy their book throughout the day and go to bed that night with chocolate and their new book. No wonder Iceland has one of the highest literacy rates in the world, with a steady rate of 99% in all age and gender categories.
It’s that time of year again. Christmas is officially here, even though the advertisements for the “best” gifts were around before Halloween costumes were available. Each year the time seems to go by even faster than the year before. It can be so hectic as the actual day arrives, and even easier to get wrapped up in frantically trying to find the “perfect” gift, decide on the “perfect” dinner menu, or get the house ready for all the family visitors.
It never ceases to amaze me when a semester comes to a close so quickly. This school year has already flown by so fast, but it has been a great one. I have seen students grow and flourish in their talents and in their faith. I have seen a teaching staff come together and love and support one another. What a true joy it is tong to the Calvary family.
Family. Calvary Day School has been described with many different adjectives, but family is the one that resounds through most graduates when talking about their alma mater. Whether it be among the faculty, administrators, or within the student body, the relationship built on the 22 acres at the corner of Waters Avenue and 63rd are lasting.
Morgan Starling - Assistant Director of Development
Today’s world is rapidly changing. As parents, grandparents, family, and friends, we all want to protect our children in the best way possible. Calvary Day School is taking action to better improve the security of our campus. We are currently working to update the external doors on our campus to a card swipe entry for faculty and students. Some of the doors have already been updated in the Early Learning Center. Essentially our campus will remain a “locked” campus 24 hours of the day. The campus will also receive 72 new cameras, bringing our total to 150 security cameras. We are setting out to make Calvary Day School’s campus one of the safest in the Southeast.
We are extremely excited about our second Middle School Career Day, which will be taking place on Thursday, December 13. We believe this will be a great opportunity for our students to learn more about careers in many different fields, as well as the steps that are necessary to reach success in these fields. We are also fortunate that many of the individuals who will be back on campus speaking to our middle school students are Calvary graduates. It is exciting to see our alumni giving back to the future generations of Cavaliers.
This year Collegeboard will be releasing scores to students via in an earlier format this year. If your student provided an email address on the PSAT answer sheet, they will receive an email notification to check their College Board account, and they will be able to view their scores. Students will still receive an answer document folder and a full explanation on how to read and understand their scores. I will be coming into your student’s English class during the 2nd week of January, as usual, to provide explanations and answers to all questions. The reason that I will not be providing this information session on the day the scores are released is because that is during exam time, and I do not want to interrupt that very important time of testing.
On November 14, 2018, members of the Competition Cheerleaders spent some time with the residents of the Savannah Rehabilitation and Nursing Home. As part of Caleb’s Project, funds were collected in order to provide a gift for the women and men of the center. The girls spent the afternoon greeting and personally handing out socks to each of them. The smiles on both the girls’ and residents’ faces were priceless.
Do our actions really show that we belong to the truth? This year’s theme has really challenged me to examine every facet of my life and ask this question. Many times it is very easy to show our faith in the big things of life, but what about the small things, especially when no one is looking?
‘Tis the season to start studying for those elusive high school midterm exams. The echoes ring in my ears of the freshman students….”Do the exams count in my overall average?” Yes, Virginia, they do count, and Santa will be coming too late to assist with any exam help. In all seriousness, exams are an important element of high school that extends to college exam preparation.
We are so excited to host our first STEM night Thursday, December 6th from 6-8 pm. We will begin in Wilder Chapel at 6 pm and then go upstairs to view the 20 hands-on activities and engaging demos. The various themes will include math, art, music, chemistry, physics, biology and more. All Calvary students have had the opportunity to participate in STEM classes this year. The event is free and open to the Calvary families as well as the public.
Students in Mrs.Herndon’s Engineering class recently designed, constructed, and tested air powered rockets. Using the Whitebox Engineering toolsuite, students researched the primary engineering principles involved in designing a rocket - weight, thrust, drag, stability, and recovery.
Field trips should be acknowledged as important moments in learning. They provide a shared social experience that provides the opportunity for students to encounter and explore novel things in an authentic setting.
Each year we are very blessed to see numerous students and families join us here at Calvary. It is an amazing time getting to know these families on a personal level and seeing the kids grow up each and every year.
We have the pleasure of hosting a Scholastic Book Fair 1-2 times per year. This year was by far our most attended fair ever, with over 125 visitors attending our “Grand” Event, a packed house for our Book Character Day, and a full library for the Book Fair Night.
The following Calvary athletes signed their National Letter of Intent today, November 14th at Calvary Day School. Madison Sprosty to Shorter University for volleyball, Basia Peragine to Stonehill College for volleyball and Maddy Thomas to Brewton Parker College for softball.
Love and kindness are two qualities that Calvary Day School strives to incorporate into academics. To do this, Calvary’s teachers strive to include traits which make Calvary feel like a home and a close-knit family. Seventeen current staff members/teachers graduated from Calvary and have returned to impact our students. One of those is kindergarten teacher Mrs. Kimberly Bland Stuckey, or Mrs. Stuckey as she is known in the classroom.
Our fourth graders had an amazing STEM experience last week. They just finished reading Charlotte's Web as a class, and so they were asked to design their own ferris wheel.
The Calvary Day School chapter of the National Honor Society has some of the brightest students in our school, yes, but what is often overlooked are the four pillars that are evaluated for a student to be chosen for membership in NHS.
One of 50,000. Georgia Southern University has 120,000 living alumni. Of that, 50,000 are under the age of 40. M. Wayne Murphy, Jr. was selected to be honored as one of the top Eagle Alumni under the age of 40. This prestigious honor is awarded in Statesboro every other year and, hundreds of applicants are nominated.
As the school year is underway, it is amazing to see the 192 new students fitting it to what it means to "Belong" here at Calvary. We have already seen numerous friendships emerge in a few short weeks, and we are extremely excited to see what God has in store for our students this year.
One of the things that teachers, administrators, and parents need is time. A long weekend, a quiet night at home, a summer break to help restore our view of things. Breaks give us time to see into the future, to look back, to see through some past problems/issues, to look at any “blind spots" (see Matthew 7:5). Breaks allow us to reflect upon things that help us regain our balance and give us new hopes and dreams.
October is PSAT month. PSAT stands for Preliminary Scholastic Assessment Test and serves as the practice to the college entrance exam, the SAT. College Board is the governing body for the PSAT, SAT, and AP exam. The College Board has developed a new suite of assessments that they are rolling out this fall. The new products are the PSAT 8/9, PSAT/ NMSQT, and SAT.
Because of the cancellation of school last Friday, the Calvary Day School Homecoming football game vs. McIntosh Academy will be played on Saturday, September 22nd with kickoff slated for 7:00 pm at Specialty Sports Complex.
The 10th Annual Alumni Low Country Boil is still scheduled to take place before the football game even though it has been moved to Saturday (9/22). The serving line will open at 5:15 pm and donations will be accepted under the Harvey Athletic Pavillon (batting cages next to Speciality Sports Complex). All alumni are invited to attend and can RSVP via this link. If you have already responded and plan to come Saturday night, you do not need to RSVP again. If you did RSVP and cannot attend, please email Gordon Hunter at ghunter@calvarydayschool.com.
Students in the Introduction to Engineering course completed their first project this week. During the project, students applied the different steps of the Engineering Design Process as they designed, analyzed, built, and tested a mousetrap car. The Whitebox Learning Environment provided background research into the physics involved in building a successful car - simple machines, friction, and mechanisms. After researching the problem, students used the 3-D solid modeler and analysis tool suite to optimize and virtually test their design. Once the design concepts were complete, students generated construction plans and built physical models of their cars. The project culminated in a race to see which car best met the design requirements. This hands-on approach allowed students to learn from their successes and their failures as they put into practice many of the skills necessary to be successful in any engineering field.
Due to potential severe weather from Hurricane Florence, there will be no school for Calvary Day School or Calvary Early Learning Center on Friday, September 14. We will have a regular school day on Thursday, September 13 but all after school activities and athletic activities will be cancelled. While the path of the storm is still in question, we want to keep our families safe.
Research is a priority at Calvary Day School. Our dedicated English teachers train students to be effective and proficient in all areas of the research process, beginning with solid writing and grammar instruction in Lower School, emergent research writing in Middle School, and, finally, very detailed, challenging, and specific research projects throughout the High School years. Successful research is a lengthy and systematic process. The basic steps for research writing at Calvary Day School are taught following this basic format:
Fall is an important time to begin the traditional visits to college campuses. I encourage all high school-aged students to really start thinking about college options and possibilities. It is never too soon to start visiting schools. Colleges and universities come in all shapes, sizes, and populations and carry vastly different majors and are located everywhere. Does one want to be just an hour up the road, so that he/she is able to come home at will or is it possible that 12 hours is not quite far enough away? These can be challenging questions, yet ones that need to be addressed and answered if your student is going to be prepared and ready for the college he/she selects.
What does it mean to BELONG in Calvary Athletics? It means to BELONG to something greater than yourself. Research shows that sports activities help to build communities by creating a greater sense of connection and feeling of inclusion.
Our Lower School teachers participated in some exciting professional development last week at our weekly staff meeting. Our STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) coordinator, Sandy Hunt, led the teachers in an interdisciplinary activity. In teams of four, the teachers worked at a table covered with different size Legos and they had ninety seconds to build the "tallest tower possible".

Student travel offers so many benefits to students. This experience helps them grow to be more independent, expand their horizons, experience other cultures, and so much more. In our high school, we are committed to providing multiple opportunities for students to travel both domestically and abroad. These experiences will create lifelong memories with friends as well as help students see the amazing world God has created for us.
Another exciting school year is upon us, and we are very blessed to add 190 new students and their families to Calvary Day School for the 2018/2019 school year. At this time we have 109 new Lower School students, 39 new middle school students, and 42 new high school students.
When you meet him, you’ll know. He always seems to be smiling and full of energy. With five kids of his own, I have no doubt that the excitement he brings every day comes from the Holy Spirit.
Grady, who is now a 6th grade Cavalier, was invited to attend a leadership conference in Washington D.C. this summer. His fifth grade teachers nominated him as an outstanding student from Calvary Day School. These are his words about his experience:
This summer has gone by so fast, but we are excited to welcome students back. This will be an exciting year of “new” for our school. We will have our first football season our new field. We will have several new teachers joining the Calvary team. And we will have a brand new cafeteria with a new menu. God is truly blessing our school in so many ways.
During my 27 months as Director of Development, I’ve been amazed at the many things Calvary Day School offers its students. The academic rigor is constantly increasing. The opportunity for students to get involved in student organizations like a nationally-recognized Yearbook Staff, the student-led praise team, and the 3-time defending GHSA State Champions Volleyball program is just the tip of the iceberg. I would put the Calvary faculty up against any faculty in the state. But it does not end when Cavaliers graduate.
Third grade enjoyed an all day Read-A-Thon last week which apparently included some pretty amazing snacks. Between the two classes they racked up a total of 92 AR points in one day! See what some of Mrs. Lee's students had to say about the day.
The transition from fifth grade to sixth grade is often met with some fear balanced with a lot of excitement. This was the general response from Calvary’s fifth graders when asked if they were ready for middle school, and yet some of them realize that they do not want to begin the process of growing up.
This story began on August 12th, 2005. I was barely 5 years old, scared and unsure of what was going on in my life. That is the day when the best thing in life happened to me. On the corner of 63rd and Waters sits a school that goes by the name of Calvary Day School; this school, little did I know, would be my second home.
Congratulations to Sara Daniels for being named top high school athlete last night by the Greater Savannah Hall of Fame! Sara has had a notable volleyball career at Calvary including three state championships and has signed with St. Louis University.
On April 28, Calvary’s Engineering Team took first place in the Georgia Southern Engineering Design Challenge. The team, comprised of 8 students and 3 advisors, employed the Engineering Design Process in a real world challenge -- building a battery powered go-kart.
Cavalier Soccer moves on to the Elite 8 after a thrilling 3-2 victory this afternoon. Haley Titus buried the game-winner in double overtime to beat Prince Avenue at Specialty Sports Complex. The team will travel to Walker on Friday to continue postseason play. Way to go ladies!
Congratulations to Marmda Sun for winning Southern Teachers prestigious 2018 Student Art Contest.
“Euphony of Luminescence” will appear in the Southern Teachers 2018-19 academic year art calendar, which is distributed to over 2,000 independent schools around the country.
Marmda will also receive five copies of the art calendar and a $50 gift certificate for art supplies.
Will Sharpe qualifies for the Official GHSA State Golf Tournament in a two-hole playoff! Will stuffed a nine iron and makes par to win the second playoff hole! Congrats, Will! Well deserved!
Calvary’s Engineering Club exposes students to different types of engineering, giving them hands-on experience in applying the engineering process in a variety of disciplines. This year alone, our students have explored civil, mechanical, electrical, and computer engineering through an assortment of different activities.
This morning at the Georgia Athletic Directors Conference Coach Griffin was named as Region 3-A Athletic Director of the year. This is his 6th overall selection and 3rd consecutive honor. Coach Griffin serves as Region 3-A President, is a member of the GADA Board of Directors and was recently named to the Board for the Savannah Sports Council.
Congratulations Coach Griffin! We love you and appreciate your dedication and everything that you do for Calvary Day School on the field and off.
Careers involving the knowledge and use of technology are rapidly growing throughout the world. In fact, U.S. News and World Report states that, “tech jobs will grow faster than the average for all jobs at a rate of 12 percent this decade.”
I still hear the sound of you picking your guitar and quietly singing in your bedroom next to mine in Campus Club. The way that your smile would light up a room was a sight to see. Your knowledge and ability to retain information is something I envy to this day.
It's that time of year again, and the Admissions Department is in full swing for next year's enrollment. While we were extremely blessed last year with the growth of the student body, exceeding over 200 new students, we have already seen even more interest at this time from prospective families for the 2018/2019 school year.
I truly believe that God crafts and molds each one of us to make an impact for His kingdom. We are each given talents and gifts so that we can go out into the world for His glory and His purpose.
Night sweats, pain or a feeling of fullness below the ribs, unexplained weight loss, bone pain, fatigue, growth delays, hearing loss, weakness, fever, shortness of breath during basic everyday activities, infection, low blood cell count, and thyroid dysfunction. These are all signs and symptoms of different forms of leukemia and lymphoma.
The price for college tuition seems to rise on a yearly basis, increasing the need to earn scholarships and academic grants to help cover the costs. Georgia implemented the HOPE scholarship in 1993, and although there have been changes, the scholarship is still running strong. The HOPE and Zell scholarships are most helpful in assisting parents with tuition payments.
Math concepts, the value of teamwork, good sportsmanship, and cheering your classmates on to victory are all things learned on “100 Day” at Calvary Day School.
There are many reasons why Skylar and I chose to bring our son Kaiden to Calvary Day School. To begin with, we are both Calvary alumni ourselves. We were both afforded the opportunity to attend a wonderful school that not only instilled knowledge in us, but also helped us grow with Christ.
Yesterday Calvary Day School supporters, students, administrators, alumni and parents broke ground on the new Specialty Sports Complex. Once completed, this facility will be one of the premier athletic playing surfaces in the Southeast. Check out the photos of this historic day on our campus!

Calvary Day School will host a group of supporters and administrators on Tuesday as the school will break ground on a new 83,000 square foot athletic complex. Construction will begin following the groundbreaking ceremony with the completion process taking between sixty and seventy-five days.
For so many people, when you say the word “education” or “school”, you think of students sitting in classrooms with textbooks and a teacher. Even though the adage states that a picture is worth a thousand words, education must move beyond the one dimensional level of just a textbook. Providing experiences for students to witness God’s creation first hand is a priceless part of what education should be for every student.
Information and access to information are cornerstones to the college counseling process at Calvary Day School. The college admissions process can be confusing, difficult to understand, and frustrating because it is ever changing. Please know that at Calvary, you never have to walk this path alone. College counseling and preparation for the college application process are available throughout a student’s high school tenure.
Any Athletic Director or anyone in any leadership position will tell you that you are only as good as the people around you. Well, it goes without saying that we at Calvary are blessed with one of the best coaching staffs in the state! I am not just saying it because I bleed Purple and Gold, but I am surrounded by a coaching staff, young and seasoned veterans, that do the same.
