Career Day at Calvary Day School

Gordon Hunter

In my life I have wanted to pursue many different career paths. As a teen, I was going to become the General Manager of the Atlanta Braves. In college that pursuit changed (as it does for so many) to wanting to become a collegiate Athletic Director. After getting married to my beautiful wife, Hannah, and having our first child, Nelson, my professional career pursuit changed again to allow more time to be spent with my family.

At Calvary Day School, we are trying to encourage our high school students to start pursuing their career path earlier. We believe the earlier they start seeking experience and guidance, the more likely they are to realize what profession they want to or don't want to pursue. Experience is what employers are looking for. To separate themselves from thousands of other college graduates, we hope Calvary graduates will pursue professional experience while in high school and college. That experience may be in internships or co-ops while in college or using Mini-mester to gain some valuable knowledge into the careers they seek.

To aid in this process, we hosted our 8th annual Career Day on April 12th in the high school building. We asked alumni, parents, and business leaders to come speak to our students about the professional journey they have traveled. Students are given the opportunity to rank the five professional sessions they want to hear from most, and they are placed based on availability and seniority. Each high school student will spend three thirty-minute sessions learning about the speakers’ careers. They are given the chance to ask questions and gain a network of people to lean on for guidance in the future.

This year we were blessed to host thirty-three community leaders from many professions. The response was so great that we had to cut off the number of speakers because we ran out of space to host them. Fifteen of the speakers were Calvary Day School alumni, wanting to give back to the school that helped start their professional paths.  The list of speakers can be found below.

We are so grateful that each of these speakers took some time out of their busy schedules to make a positive impact on our students. I've heard many alumni say Career Day speakers helped shape their professional path. Our students and administration are thankful to each of these Christian business leaders. This is the start of a long journey for all of our students. I know they appreciate all the guidance and wisdom that is shared on Career Day!
