Juniors...taking the ASVAB provides the opportunity for Career Insight

Stacey Mell
On Friday, February 17th, the junior class at Calvary will take the ASVAB, Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery assessment. This vocational measurement provides our students with the opportunity to learn more about their interests and how those interests correspond with college majors and possible career options. The results are presented to students in the FYI - Find Your Interests Work guide and is based on the theories of John Holland, the leading career theorist of our time.

This measurement will assess students occupational interests in terms of six interest types. The assessment will type students into six different personality types - which are displayed in the RIASEC hexagon:

Realistic - Mechanical and Outdoor
Investigative - Science and Mathematics
Artistic - Art, Music, and Literature
Social- Social Service
Enterprising - Business Contact
Conventional - Business Detail

The FYI tends to identify a person’s strongest personality type and then a second and third corresponding type. For example, a student may be identified as a RSE. The results worksheet allows the students to identify what college majors relate to their identified personality types and then what possible career fields match up with the interests.

As one can tell, a tremendous amount of knowledge can be gained through the experience of taking the ASVAB. The results provide insight and guidance into pursuing a college major that embraces our strengths and fields of interest.

Results will be distributed and explained to students in their English classes on April 5th. Please encourage your students to approach this assessment with a seriousness of purpose and a real desire to learn more about themselves and their future career opportunities.
