We are a community of learners and leaders where teaching and learning are stimulating, interesting, and Christ-centered. Students, staff, and parents are supportive of one another and work cooperatively to reach ever higher academic, social, emotional, and spiritual competencies. Differences are accepted and respected by students, staff, and parents. We follow many pathways to learning while sharing goals that unite us, a common core of knowledge, and a belief in biblical truths.
It is our desire to learn more about you and your family and how we may best serve your child. We seek to develop each student: academically, athletically, socially and most of all, spiritually. In turn, we are seeking students who want to integrate and fully invest in the school with their time and talent to obtain the most out of their experience here at Calvary Day School.
Our key verse at Calvary Day School is Luke 2:52, which states: “So Jesus grew both in height and in wisdom, and he was loved by God and by all who knew him.” For the Administration and educators of Calvary, this verse is a presentation of the guiding force behind everything we do. This verse encompasses the four components of a truly Christian philosophy of education: physical growth, intellectual growth, spiritual growth, and social/interpersonal growth.
At Calvary Day School, we are called to a higher mission. We infuse faith into our classrooms, clubs, gymnasiums, playing fields, etc.; in essence, into whatever is being done or taught. At Calvary we also pursue excellence in whatever we do. As a result of this internal pursuit of excellence, Calvary was recognized as the first charter member of the National Elementary Honor Society, and our students are accepted each year into some of the finest colleges and universities in the United States, with over half of these students typically receiving academic scholarships.
Since Calvary Day School opened its doors in 1961, it has been blessed with enormous support from those who seek to further the school’s mission of providing an academically challenging education in a uniquely Christian environment. Exceptional teachers, state-of-the-art facilities, and superior athletic venues are all possible because of the generous support of the Calvary family.
Setting the Standard in Calvary Athletics-Calvary Coaches
Chad Griffin
I am going to toss out some records for you, and these coaches will also be the first to admit that you are only as good as the players you have. That is true to a certain extent, but for us at Calvary in an educational-based athletic department where the focus is the development of the student-athlete as a whole, not just seeking wins, we strive to make student-athletes the very best they can be in each area of their lives. So, when you are truly invested in a young person, he or she will learn to sacrifice for the greater good. When that happens, so does the development of a certain culture that breeds success on so many levels. Mark Stroud reached his career 200th win this year, 77 of those wins being at Calvary, which gives his program a 73% winning percentage. Also, he reached the state playoffs each year for the last 8 years. Everywhere I go around that state and those that know football and Calvary always ask about Mark Stroud and how great of a man he is. Very humbling to say the least.
Hannah Hunter is only five years into her coaching tenure but has landed as the one the best coaches in the state. A Three-Peat as the GHSA Class A Volleyball State Champions has solidified her development of a program. If you have a chance to sit and talk with Hannah about volleyball, she knows what she wants and also knows that she doesn't know it all and is constantly seeking to get better. Hannah is very reflective, and that is what makes her great.
Sherry Griffin is in her 16th year at Calvary and 15th as the head of the Calvary Softball program. Coach Griffin surpassed the 250 win mark this season, averaging almost 17 wins a year. A strong leader, Sherry has had the ability to impact a generation plus of young women and show what it is like to be a role model as a teacher, coach, wife, and mom, teaching life lessons on a daily basis.
Jackie Hamilton a Calvary lifer. His Mom wrote the school’s Alma Mater-enough said. Coach Hamilton has coached a lot of sports over his 28 years at Calvary. But the last 13 years as the head Girls Basketball coach have been one of the best runs in recent history. The Lady Cavs are off to another great start, 11-1, winning the SCCPS Christmas tournament for their bracket, and contending for another Region 3-A title. But it wasn't just the 2007 State Championship. It is the multiple generations that he has impacted. Coach Hamilton and his Girls Basketball team recently reached the 300 win mark in just the start of his 13th season. That is almost 25 wins a year. These are crazy numbers, not just for Jackie but for a lot of our head coaches. They all will tell you they will never remember all the W’s and L’s, but they can recall all the players they coached, the graduation announcements, wedding invitations, and the impact their players have had on them. So you think coaching is easy, no it is not. It's a calling; it's a balancing act between your life and family and the life you give to impact others. These coaches sacrifice so much to make this school and their programs a part of the mission of Calvary Day School- Kingdom Work-Impacting Lives. Building Champions Through Christ-That is the Calvary Difference!
