John Offer Jr. Attends Leadership Conference in Washington D.C.

“I had the opportunity to attend the Junior National Young Leadership Conference in Washington D.C this summer.

Before I left for the conference, I was asked to write an essay about leadership. I was challenged to list the characteristics of a good leader. I chose serving and protection, because our Lord serves and protects. My examples are the dedication and sacrifices of the leaders in our country.  These are the men and women that have and continue to serve in all four branches of the United States Military.  A leader should be admired for his brave acts to protect and serve others.

I walked into the conference with excitement. The counselors helped me sign in, and I entered into a room to join the largest game of musical chairs.  It was great way to meet new friends. That evening, 262 students united together to start this experience and learn together about leadership.

During the week we visited historical sites, museums, and memorials. Throughout the whole week, my small group did leadership projects and simulations. I was also able to learn and play the role of a political figure.

Before departing to come home, I got to meet the keynote speaker, Anthony Robles. He explained how his personal challenges changed his life and how he became a leader. Anthony was born with one leg but overcame many obstacles, even though he was different.  Anthony taught me that leaders are not afraid to stand out. Do not let challenges become excuses. If you want to be the best, work harder and longer than everyone else.

I left the conference knowing that our school is full of leaders. We are all leaders, and each one of us has a part in making a difference at our school.  I am honored to share my experience with you. I am thankful for this opportunity that Calvary has provided. I am blessed to call Calvary home.”
