The Beacon staff’s 2018 book, Shift, was awarded Quill & Scroll’s Blue and Gold Staff Excellence Overall Award, which is given to only one yearbook staff in the country. Along with this, the staff was awarded the Blue and Gold Staff Excellence in Comprehensive Writing and the Blue and Gold Staff Excellence in Comprehensive Visuals.
“Winning the overall staff excellence award makes all of our hard work throughout the year worth it,” Avery Householder (12) said. “This staff works incredibly hard to write and design to the best of our abilities, and this award only proves that our work is recognized on a national level.”
Beacon’s writing and design staff was recognized as one of the top three staffs in the country by Quill & Scroll. As well as Excellence Sweepstakes awards, there were 13 individual awards for National Excellence winners.
The staff was awarded five Excellence Sweepstakes, an award given to only one student in the country per category. This included Haley Burke (class of 2018), for index, McKaela Kramer (12), for personality profile, Kishan Patel (class of 2018), for academics, Haley Burke, Colton Taylor (class of 2018), and Nicole Crowley (class of 2018), for theme development, and Emma Hearn (10), for her clubs and organizations piece.
“I honestly thought I would not win anything. I was really shocked when [adviser] Mr. [Joshua] Brewer called my name for the award. I felt really proud of what I had accomplished in the yearbook last year,” Hearn said.
Alongside the Quill & Scroll awards, the staff received All-Georgia (best in the state) from Georgia Scholastic Press Association and over 16 individual awards. Beacon also received a Gold Medal rating from Columbia Scholastic Press Association, an All-Southern from Southern Interscholastic Press Association, and an All American ranking from National Scholastic Press Association. The staff is still waiting to receive their individual results from SIPA.
This was the first time the Beacon staff was awarded the Quill & Scroll’s Blue & Gold Staff Excellence Overall Award - making them the best staff in the country.
