The mission of Calvary Day School’s Media program is to ensure that students and staff are effective users of ideas and consumers of information. Two dedicated Media Centers, located in the Lower School and High School buildings, and four computer labs, are designed to encourage and accommodate 21st-century learning skills, dispositions, and responsibilities. Our programs are modeled based on the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) Standards for the 21st Century Learner. These standards feature two key components: reading and inquiry. The Media Center staff members hope to empower students to challenge their learning capabilities through utilizing thoughtfulness and curiosity.

The Media Centers are equipped with desktop computers so that students have ready access to information and other digital learning tools. As part of our 1:1 initiative, Chromebooks are issued to all high schoolers for their use on and off campus. Middle school students utilize classroom sets of Chromebooks in all core subjects areas. Classroom sets of Chromebooks are also available in our Lower School program for grades 3-5. To complete a full 1:1 implementation with technology, students in Pre-kindergarten through 2nd grade utilize classroom sets of Nexus 7 tablets. Calvary’s Media Centers provide an array of print materials, available via student accounts. The library collection, including print, non-print, audio-visual resources, as well as digital holdings, is constantly evolving to better meet the needs of students and teachers.

Reading is the heart of Calvary’s Media program. The AASL states clearly that “reading is a foundational skill for learning, personal growth, and enjoyment. The degree to which students can read and understand information in all formats (i.e. picture, video, print) and all contexts is a key indicator of success in school and in life” (ALA, 2009). The Media Center staff members are truly committed to this goal of developing student skills for reading in different contexts. In addition to enhanced reading abilities, students also gain a newfound appreciation for reading through the various sponsored programs and events throughout the year, including Accelerated Reader, Children’s Book Week, book clubs, Dr. Seuss Day, and Read Across America. Reading truly provides a window to the world, and the Media Center aims to open students’ eyes through ready access to materials, technologies, engaging programs, and one-on-one library services.
