STEM Lab Expansion

Written By: Sandy Hunt
STEM--science, technology, engineering, and math--has become a major buzzword in education over the last decade. Although the idea of problem-based learning and real-world relevance in the classroom has been a pursuit of educators for over 50 years, STEM education has increasingly become more of a focus for all levels of education in all content areas. Calvary’s STEM program reinforces communication, collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking with challenging and fun lessons.

If you have been on Calvary’s campus at any point in the past two years, you have seen the tremendous growth and change that is happening! The development and implementation of Calvary’s STEM program has been a big part of this growth, and we could not be more excited!
The STEM Lab has expanded, and our program is continuing to grow! What was once four individual classrooms is now a massive open space for Calvary students to move and work freely as they research and brainstorm solutions related to content they are learning in their traditional classrooms. At one end of the space is the Research Lab, lined with computers and a 3D printer where students code, program, 3D model, design, animate and print. Then, step into the next room where large tables allow for group discussions and teaching, encouraging collaboration and communication between students. The STEM Lab continues into the next area, with full shelves stocked with robots, Legos, K’NEX, marble mazes, catapults, and more engaging resources for all grade levels. This room is also home to Calvary’s FIRST Lego League robotics team, the Legoliers, and all of their robotics and project equipment. Our last space is Calvary’s designated MakerSpace and Innovation Lab. Pegboards with tools, piles of various recycled materials, sewing machines, and more are all accessible for our students to use. As our students brainstorm and imagine new and improved solutions, here they are able to create prototypes and models to represent their thoughts and ideas. Incorporating art into all areas of our STEM program creates a Makerspace full of endless possibilities for engaging our students as they learn why the things they are studying matter, encouraging them to move their learning from their heads to their hearts to their hands.

Come by and visit our new STEM Lab and see what all the excitement is about! For more information on Calvary’s STEM Program, contact Sandy Hunt (shunt@calvarydayschool.com).
