What Calvary Means to Me

Written By: Addison Scarbrough Class of 2019
From early mornings spent tediously working on the yearbook, to lunch breaks serving on Honor Council, to after-school golf practices, and finally, late nights studying for AP exams, my Calvary uniform represented many different aspects of the identity I found within Calvary. It wasn’t just the outfit I wore to sit in a classroom or the clothes I was required to play golf in. The purple and gold became a marker that I belonged to Calvary Day School.
My name is Addison Scarbrough. For thirteen years, I called 4625 Waters Avenue my home away from home. Toward the end of my eighth-grade year, my family lost our home and most of our belongings to a fire. As difficult as this time was for me, the one consistent support was the community at Calvary. Calvary taught me that a home doesn’t necessarily need to have four walls and a roof. Home is the place where you are surrounded by the ones you love. It is a place of belonging. If it weren’t for the teachers, administrators, and friends who poured into me at Calvary, I would not be able to call this place home.

Calvary is full of memories from walking with my finger on the wall in kindergarten, all the way to throwing my cap (and toilet paper roll) at graduation. To the students filling the chapel pews behind me, make the most of your years at Calvary. Make sure to pour into relationships with your teachers, participate in school events, and have fun! Your time is limited wherever you find yourself, so don’t waste the gift you have been given.

I thank God for the time He has given me at Calvary because it is here where I have made lifetime friends, countless memories, and seen unconditional love at work in the hearts of my teachers. I am sad to see my time at Calvary in my rear view mirror and my uniform folded up, never to be worn again, but I am confident that the lessons I’ve learned here will be carried with me forever. I have been and always will be proud to call myself a Cavalier.
