Hello Parents and Campers,

My name is Chris Watson, and it is with great excitement that I come on board as the Calvary Summer Academy Director. As the Children’s Pastor of Calvary Baptist Temple as well as a teacher in the school, my goal is to combine the best of what Calvary does as a church and school to make this summer the best summer ever for your family.
Prior to coming to Calvary, I earned a Bachelor Degree in Education with a Sports and Recreation focus from Ohio State University. I have a wealth of experience in operating my own youth sports organization, coaching, and working with children of all ages. I am married to my high school sweetheart, and we have a 4 children ages seven, five, three, and one. We enjoy spending time as a family at the beach, our kids’ sporting events, and here at Calvary.
Proverbs 22:6 says, “Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” On behalf of the entire Summer Camp staff, we are excited to be partnering with you to help your child grow in all phases of life. Our mission at the Calvary Summer Academy is to provide parents and campers with a Convenient, Community-Based, and Christ-centered learning experience through engaging activities that will help develop the camper socially, physically, academically, and spiritually. Our staff is looking forward to pursuing this mission each and every day with your child this summer! We are looking forward to a great summer filled with happiness, joy, and great memories!

In Christ,

Chris Watson

  • General Information

We look forward to a great summer here at camp and each child has several things he/she will need to bring each day. Your child’s name should be on anything brought to camp (towels, lunchbox, water bottle, etc.). We will have a lost and found area in the meeting room that will have items found at the end of the day.

    Drop-Off/Pick-Up:
We have four designated drop-off and pick-up spots for our three groups on campus. From 7:00-9:00 AM and 3:30-6:00 PM, we will have a counselor at each spot to assist with this process. All the parents need is their 4-digit PIN number that has been emailed to you and is at the bottom of our weekly emails.

    Personal Property:
Parents, please help your child keep his/her valuables at home. We will have envelopes for your child to secure his/her money each day in the concessions area. Personal electronics or game systems should only be used by your student at appropriate times and are brought at the students own risk. If your child has their electronic device out when they should not, he/she will be asked to not bring electronic devices back to camp for the remainder of the summer. There are specific times for their usage and we do not take responsibility for anything that goes missing or damage that occurs.

    Swim Days and Swimsuits:
Students need to bring a swimsuit, sunscreen, and a towel on their scheduled pool days. We use the pool at the Jenkins Athletic Club on Waters Avenue. Students should be dressed modestly. Bikinis are not allowed! If a young lady is not dressed appropriately, she will be asked to wear a t-shirt over her swimsuit.

For kindergarten and 1st grade students, we ask that you come to camp on pool days dressed for the pool with a change of clothes in your bag. These age groups go first thing in the morning, so it cuts down on our time if everyone is dressed and ready to go upon arrival.

    Daily Needs:
Students always need to bring a water bottle and money to buy snacks from the concession area ($2 per day will get them a drink and a snack). There are also snack times during each day. Students can bring snacks and drinks from home or may purchase them from the concession area as well. The lunch menu is provided on our website. Students should come to camp dressed for activity (shorts, t-shirts, and tennis shoes). Sandals, flip-flops, and open-backed shoes are not suggested.

  • Age Groups

Calvary Summer Academy is open to rising Kindergarten children (must be 5 years old at the time of registration) through those entering the eighth grade.

Our camp is structured into four main groups:
    • Kindergarten - 1st Grade
    • 2nd Grade - 3rd Grade
    • 4th Grade - 5th Grade
    • 6th Grade - 8th Grade

Your child will be placed in the grade they will be entering in the 2019-2020 school year. In the two younger groups, the campers are split into teams with 1 to 2 counselors assigned to that team. These teams will travel together throughout the day to different stations, activities, and field trips.

  • Cost

At the Calvary Summer Academy, we want to make our camp as convenient and affordable for your family as possible. With that in mind, we operate on daily rates to give you flexibility in the days that you attend.

The rates and method of payment have changed this year, so please read the following information carefully:

Costs for 2019 are as follows:

    • 1 Child - $35 per day
    • 2 Children - $65 per day
    • 3 Children - $95 per day

Lunch from our food service provider and all activities (including field trips and pool days) are included in your daily costs. Specialty add-on camps will be available for speed and agility training, STEM, and much more. Dates and cost of these add-on camps will be available shortly.

The $50 registration fee per child is non-refundable and paid at the time of registration.

All payments will be made through ACH. Any returned payments will be charged $25. If your balance is not current within two weeks, your student will not be able to attend until it has been resolved.
  • Daily Activities

At Calvary Summer Academy our goal is to have your child participate in a wide variety of activities and games that will engage them in all aspects of life. Some of the areas that campers will be participating in are:
    • Arts and Crafts
    • Music Station
    • STEM Activities
    • Bible Skits and discussions
    • Reading Stations
In addition to these areas, we also want to engage the student physically each day with several recreational activities and sporting competitions. Campers of all ages will get daily time playing outside. Elementary students will utilize our courtyard,  and large 3-piece playground, as well as both of our full-sized gymnasiums throughout the day. Our older students will get time in our courtyard and gymnasiums as well as at our state of the art Specialty Sports Complex.

One of our campers favorite activities is going for a swim at the Jenkins Boys Club. We go swimming once a week where we have a trained lifeguard on duty at all times, and our staff are all CPR/First-Aid certified. We also take our campers on one field trip per week. Below are some of the field trips we partake in throughout the summer:

    • Inflatable Water Slides and bounce houses on campus
    • Savannah Sharks Cheer Gymnasium
    • Movie Theater
    • Roller Skating (2nd grade and up)
    • Oatland Island Wildlife Center
  • Discipline Policy

Our main goal at the Calvary Summer Academy is to provide a fun, inviting and safe environment for all campers. In order to do this, our camp has a basic discipline policy in order to correct and hopefully minimize disruptive or inappropriate behavior. At our camp, we have three major discipline issues that we do not allow:

    1. Physical contact of any kind (hitting, pushing, kicking, touching, etc.)
    2. Inappropriate language directed at either a camper or counselor
    3. Insubordination and/or disrespect to a counselor or assistant director

If a camper breaks any of these rules, the Director may decide to surpass any other discipline and send the camper home for the remainder of the day. For other discipline issues, the following “three strike” policy will be implemented:

    • 1st Strike: Verbal Warning to Camper
    • 2nd Strike: 15 minute Timeout with Assistant Director
    • 3rd Strike: Camper is sent home for the day

The following actions are considered inappropriate and not allowed at the Calvary Summer Academy and may be deemed necessary for a referral to an assistant director:

    • Uncooperative attitude
    • Threatening other campers/staff
    • Undermining the ministry of the Calvary Summer Academy
    • Leaving your group without permission
    • Issues with counselors
    • Bullying
    • Theft
The above list is not all-inclusive, but is meant to be a guide as to what is considered inappropriate behavior. Each issue will be looked at by the Director and will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. If the offense is serious enough, certain disciplinary actions may be skipped and the Director may discern what is the appropriate action to take.
