Calvary’s Scholastic Book Fair Provides Student Book Choice

We have the pleasure of hosting a Scholastic Book Fair 1-2 times per year. This year was by far our most attended and best selling fair ever, with over 125 visitors attending our “Grand” Event and purchases totalling over $7000. While it is great to see an amazing turnout for a special event and have great sales totals, the primary purpose of Calvary’s Scholastic Book Fair is to put books in the hands of our students. This year our families, through supporting the Book Fair, will have put over $3500 of new books in our library collection, providing our students with a wealth of books in all genres, interests, and grade levels.

Book choice is a primary factor for students becoming readers, and our library staff works diligently to provide a large selection of diverse books for all of our students. One of my favorite quotes is, “There are no reluctant readers, just kids who haven’t found their choice yet.” Providing a wide variety of literature is essential to any successful reading program. Personally, I prefer fantasy fiction and do not choose to read a lot of nonfiction or action/adventure literature. However, the reading trend for our high school boys is nonfiction, so we do a lot of research to find what they will like, even if it isn’t on my personal ‘to read’ list. We want to find the right book for the right student. The Book Fair provides a great avenue for us to purchase more books and build a better collection each year, thus providing that right fit for all students.

A special “Thank You!” to all who helped make this year’s Book Fair a huge success! We appreciate your desire to develop lifelong readers at Calvary Day School. If you didn’t get a chance to shop our Fair, you can still access our Online Fair. All proceeds will still benefit our school and purchasing of new books for our library collection.

A little more about Tonja Brunn...

Tonja Brunn holds a B.S. degree in health and physical education from Armstrong State College, an M.Ed. in counselor education from Georgia Southern University, and an M.Ed. in administration and supervision from the University of Georgia. She attends Calvary Baptist Temple, and her favorite verse is Jeremiah 29:11, “‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’” Brunn most enjoys her job because of the family atmosphere and the direct impact on students that she witnesses every day. She counts it a true joy to see the physical, academic, social, and spiritual growth of the students at Calvary Day School. Brunn enjoys spending time with her family and friends, exercising, enjoying the beach, and reading.
